Yeah, since I'm back from my 2-3 month inactivity, I thought I'd give you all a taste of what I'm working aside from work, school, theatre, MKF and all that.

Using my ever-growing knowledge of RPG Maker 2003, I have decided to start work on an RPG based off of Sonic. Yes, I know it's been done before, but I wanted to make this as original as possible, including an innovative storyline and use of dimension warping.

Here's what I have done so far:

EDIT: I have decided to call this game Sonic Adventure 3.5: Dimensional Clash. (name pending) A Title Screen is needed. smile.gif

==26 characters, including 4 secret characters and 6 Pokemon (I'll explain later) with individual evolutions==
==2 Worlds on the map (South Island & the Altar of Ancients, again, I'll explain later)
==18 Healing items already implemented==
==23 normal armors implemented==
==Special Armor equippable only by each character==
==5 Badniks (as in monsters) implemented (I think there are 5 now...)==
==All equippable weapons removed (sorry, not too fitting in a Sonic RPG)==

What still needs to be done:

==fixing the palette errors in Badniks==
==making all the face graphics and map sprites (I can't use humans forever)==

So, yeah, that's just about it. Here's one screenshot:

All that's in this shot is Sonic in battle against two Motobugs and a Buzzer. As you can see, the palettes are odd. The reason is because RPG Maker 2003 won't let me input my own .PNG images, so I spriteswapped bats to make Motobug and Buzzer.

To be honest, I was hoping I could get some people to assist me in the creation of this game. I also require custom spriters.

So anyway, that's about it for me. I'd love to hear any thoughts, questions or requests, as this won't be finished for quite a while! happy.gif

Could you please teach me? I'm using RPG Maker 2003 for the first time, but it's not going so well!

I've been trying to import Mario for the past three days. It hasn't been fun. So far, i've:

-Converted it to 256 Colors
-Converted it into BMP and PNG, both of them don't work
-For some reason, it still says invalid color depth even though i:

-Converted it into 256
-8-Bit
-Normal Color

I'm planning to make a game too.. .. err.. about Video Games.

(could you um, put typhlosion in there?) Anyways, sounds great.

PS. If you want, i could help you! I could always abondon my project and help you, instead Skie.

Well, I'm still learning myself-trying to learn everything I can about this program and how to tweak the things I need to do.

The best thing to do is go into your system files and find the rpg2003 folder. Then in RTP, find the folder labeled BattleCharSet. From there you can find human sprites of characters. Find the one that fits the palette you're using, then spriteswap. That's what I did with Sonic. I edited the Normal Man 2 sprites. I still need spriters, so if you'd like to help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I already have 6 Pokemon set, each with a secondary evolution, so I can't add any more.

So everyone knows, the 6 Pokemon are:

Slowpoke-Slowbro
Pikachu-Raichu
Vulpix-Ninetales
Grimer-Muk
Sunkern-Sunflora
Mankey-Primape

Well, since I only have 3 Badniks implemented, I might as well show what I have so far.

Motobugs are your general "first enemy in the RPG" Badnik. They can only attack.

Buzzers are a good example of "flying enemy" Badniks. They can attack and cast Fire 1 (which will be something different in due time). They have good resistance against fire but they don't have good resistance against anything else.

Pogo-Hoppers are interesting enemies because they can attack twice in one turn. This can be a hassle if dealing with multiple Pogo-Hoppers at once.

I'll have to find the cracked version of RPG maker seeing how my trial ended months ago. If i find out how to add sprites (cause sprite swaping leds to limited things) ill let ya no.

Its made in RPG Maker 2003, so you don't need your cracked version (i think.)

Well, that would be awesome.

Right now, I need custom map sprites of the characters. The main ones would be nice right now. I'll ask for the secret characters and the Pokemon later.

Right now, the 10 main characters in this game are as follows:
-Sonic
-Tails
-Knuckles
-Shadow
-Amy
-Espio
-Mighty
-Metal Sonic
-Shadow Android
-Metal Knuckles

I might be able to make due with the map sprites from Sonic Battle, but I'm afraid they might be too small.

These little bastards are a pain to fight! They have the chance of paralyzing your allies, so make sure to bring Palsy Peppers when fighting these! (Palsy Peppers cure paralysis & stun, btw)

As of today (09/23/08), Sonic and Tails have both been completed in sprites and animations.

I really need to eat dinner and take a nap now. In case anybody on the design team needs the source, it is now uploaded. You can get it at this address.
This is my Mediafire account, so please, only the design team should use this. Don't consider this to be a demo. It's far from releasable yet.

I could totally offer help with some programming details because i spent 3 years making an rpg game on the maker. it was decent. but i learned alot about switches whatnot. the only thing i couldn't figure out was how to get the enemy names to appear on the battle screen

Well, I've shortened the list of characters to 14 for now (10 regulars, 4 secret) and took the Pokemon out for now. I might add one again soon.

As for Metal Sonic, Shadow Android and Metal Knuckles, I was planning that in the storyline, they are re-activated by Eggman to do his bidding, then turn good later on and rebel against him. I lost a half-decent spritesheet for Metal Knuckles, and there don't seem to be any good sprite edits of Metal Sonic floating around.

Could you code the intro to the game, as in, the one the player witnesses when starting a new game?

I believe I wanted to use text over images. Moving sprites and actions might take too much work.

What I did was use my images as a scrolling background but programmed it not to move. i imported a blank tileset so you cant see any tiles just underneath. and i also made a blank character that is invisible. so that way all you will see is the background. you can program you background to change as needed. just set you event to auto start the text. i believe you can make the text box invisible just so the text shows.

when programming stories i like to drop all party members and put my invisible character out there. so then all other events are your party and you can animate them to move around the map. and also by moving your invis you can make the screen pan. but before you regain control or go into a boss fight just remember to re add your party and drop the invis

does that help at all?

Been on break for a while, cuz' i went to Camp. What d'you need me to work on?

Oh, and for the Metal Knux/Metal Sonic/Android Shadow.. Perhaps, it would be better if you used E-102 Gamma (if i spelled that right) instead.

It'll need some touch-up's.

I imagine we'll be using the Sonic Adventure/Sonic Battle sprites, so all we need is for you to modify them.

Perhaps an attack for Amy that doesn't include her hammer? Look in the Sonic Battle sprites.

(I don't know, but there should be more important characters in this game.
Mighty is a nice addition, but maybe there should be Cream? dry.gif )

Oh, I forgot to mention this, guys: The required sprites for the characters are in a separate folder located in the RAR of the RPG. When you download it via Mediafire, in the Sonic RPG folder there is a folder that says "required sprites". I put those there just in case anybody needs them. laugh.gif

Typho: I agree, a vote is good. I hadn't planned on putting Cream in, but I'll think about it.

hi skie, i can make maps for the game. i have a working knowledge of the sonic world (including all side media, ive even got a timeline as to where every comic, tv series and game fits in, except sonic the comic, as that would clash like hell with archie)and i am good with maps, probaby better with rpg mapping then with side scrolling level design.

Well, making maps using the engine isn't all that hard. It's putting events in that's harder. laugh.gif

Sonic's sprite doesn't seem to show after i added the spindash and the mega spindash.

Today I plan to tweak Sonic, make some more skills and finish his sprites for him.

As far as I know, Sonic was already done spritewise... As for skills I had one more in mind for Sonic- The Air Strike- a spinning-air-strike melee move. I was hoping that the Air Strike and the Spin Dash would be Sonic's first two skills that he has from the start.

I might not have time for today, since i have to study and all. I'll try and update Sonic, though. He'll most likely be a fast, good attacker but low defense and average everything else.

As usual, Tails is a mage. average defense, low health, high int, etc. etc.

Knuckles is the powerhouse and all.

I figured Shadow would have the same stats as Sonic but with slightly higher attack and defense.

Mighty should be the 2nd most powerful character in this game, (Knux being the first) with high attack and defense but low speed.

For the skills Tails uses... I haven't figured it out quite yet. I was hoping that the enemies could use the magic already stored in RPG Maker's database and that we could come up with skills for Tails by ourselves.

am i still in this or what? do you still need map sprites? BTW typho, what i mean is when you play sonic battle story mode in the beginning the map sprites of sonic looks just like his running sprites but smaller.

If you'd like to help, you can always be a sprite wrangler- finding sprites from RPGs to use as enemies. After all, the entire enemy list can't be Badniks alone. wink.gif

it's a turn style RPG and not a RT RPG so those sprites wont look good enough to still picture battles

lol, I was actually planning on merging DBZ characters into the plot. I was hoping Cell would be our main antagonist, sucking up powerful enemies to gain more power. The only problem with that is that he would change form from each enemy gained, which means custom sprites might be needed. wink.gif

Cell could totally eat the android Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow. But you wouldn't be able to use the ones from the game legacy of Goku because the sprites wouldn't match.

That would be interesting. Cell would be able to gain forms that look similar to the Sonic characters. While I'm desigining the story arc for this game, I'll find a way to get them sucked in early on.

That's a great idea, especially for debug purposes.

For now, I had planned on having 4 maps so far.

-The Overworld, which has all the specific islands on it,
-The world inside Sonic's head, of which we (the design team) live. I've got the map drawn out on paper. This is the starting place in the game, and the first minor bosses in the game are located here.
-Station Square, the city where Sonic visits regularly.
-The Dusty Desert, which Sonic must cross to get back to Station Square. The first major boss (The Stone Golem) would be in this level.


Dr. M- I've taken out the Pokemon for now. When all the other characters are finished, I'll decide whether or not to put them back in.

i also reckon the 3 islands from the old games should be in:

South island: this is the where you should see eggman first in the game.
Westside island: this will be the main area if theres any death egg plot line
angel island: main area for mster emerald plot line.

Maybe there should be a character that represents us and he goes through and finds all of the sonic characters. Like the game goes in his POV and his adventures will take him to all of the characters, bosses etc. i dunno just an idea im throwing out there. it wouldn't be implausible since we are going to encounter different worldly elements like DBZ villains etc.

I guess the way I thought it out would be like this:

After the intro, Sonic is thinking to himself, wondering where he is, when he hears a voice telling to wake up. He wakes up seeing me. He thinks I'm Tails, and I set him straight. After that, I serve as the tutorial guy, answering questions about this game in general. The layout of Sonic's mind-world would be very simple, and the music would be the Magicant theme from Earthbound. The members of the design team all live in "houses" inside Sonic's mind.

When Sonic talks to members of the design team, they tell him their names and explain their roles in the designing of the game.

After finding him and speaking to him, Typho tells Sonic to look into his Brain Computer, which then tells him that he is lying unconscious several miles outside of Station Square past the Dusty Desert. To return to the real world, Sonic must cross through the Forest of Memories (also in his own mind) to get to the Cliff of Forgiveness (again, also in his own mind).

During the trek through the Forest of Memories, Sonic has an encounter with two Robot Masters who work for Eggman- Gutsman and Aquaman. (Wily has lended Eggman his robots, by the way. Notice the game crossovers?) This is the first minor boss battle in the game, but don't worry, they aren't that tough. After the dialogue and the boss battle, the two bots retreat out of Sonic's head, and Sonic exits the forest. When reaching the Cliff of Forgiveness, there is a message box closeby that says, "Look to the sky and return to the outside". He walks to the clifftop, looks out to the horizon, and the entire screen fades to white, then to black.

I haven't decided how Sonic's inside world looks like yet, but I have changed the house arrangement.

Dvv: I was actually thinking you could use your Bass form. Everybody should have their own individual look. i have two forms, which one do you pefer mm7 or mmbn bass?

either is good. I prefer the MMBN Bass mainly because his sprites are more RPG-appropriate. Plus, they would fit easier in the character sheets when we resized them. (if we have to or not)

Caveman: Any RPG animal sprites are good, and any wild animal or robot sprites work, too.

This is a message for all Design Team members: I am currently on the hunt for Megaman Robot Master sprites. Preferably the ones from MM:Power Battle/Power Fighters and Megaman 8.

Right now, the first two Robot Masters Sonic will fight are Gutsman and Aquaman. I can get sounds for Gutsman, but I have no idea where to find MM8 voiceclips. That is a request from me- I require MM8 voiceclips. wink.gif

ok I'm all most done with my sprites. you just need map sprites right? do i need those to be in any poses? do you need me to make a face portrait too? hell i feel i might as well make battle animations too lol.

Map sprites and face portraits are only necessary, Psycho_Cid.

I have no access to my computer, so I've been unable to get anything done. However, I've been writing LOTS of dialogue on paper. I want to be able to code all of that.

I figure the first beta should be at the end of the first boss when Sonic and Knuckles reach the Dusty Desert and defeat the Stone Golem. (O SHI- SPOILER ALERT)

BTW, dont worry about me taking to long with sprite (in case you are) cause im ripping them from most unpopular games in chunks (groups of 4). I got 2 forest and 2 fire based enemies coming up, i no that was uneccesary to say but I like to be precautious about things. smile.gif
