You are out of luck. Color blending like that used in the starman effect in MKF is a Pro-only feature.
Gm7 Pro is easy to get.

Either resort to sparkles, or make flashing versions of every single sprite. :/

that was really what I was trying to AVOID doing.
there's so many sprites in the game.
I'll try playing SMB3 again to see what effect was used on the NES.

Well I already have GM7 lite, and I want pro.
How do you get pro?
(last year it was $25, dunno now. and yes, I'm talking australian dollars.)
