I played the demo recently, and noticed some blue angry looking Mario guy (who was apparently a debug character). The thing that caught my eye was that the lives counter kept switching around.
This gave me the idea to have a sort of "random" button for choosing a character! You'd choose, maybe some sort of question mark guy or something, choose a stage, and you're given a random choice of character. It'd be great if you're feeling indecisive, or want a bit of a surprise.
Just a suggestion, though.

That's actually a good idea...

Yeah, it's a good idea, but you need not forget there are character-specific levels. So you shan't be able to choose Random in the last world, how about that?

Good Idea
But I think the Randomizer should be in the form of a Mario Party block
Once it lands on a character, it spits you out onto the map as the character

That would eliminate Arthur's beginning theme and such.
Also kind of unneeded.
