Full Version: New Generic Items
Obreck2
I know development has been a bit quiet the last few weeks. In order to get back into the swing of things I created a few items from Smb2. I have another WIP I'm also creating I'll unveil later.

SMB2 Cherries: Slightly altered from their Smb2 form, collecting 20 of these will produce a starman. A bit steeper than the 5 count from Smb2 but in MKF cherry count carries over between both screens and stages. Also the cherry spawned Starman has a normal MKF invinciblity time limit. not the painfully short Smb2 limit:

POW blocks have been given their proper crushed animation:

Shell grass: Turtle shells can sometime be pulled out of grass stalks. After first throw they take on the properties of a normal MKF shell weapon. One point of interest is you don't need to be able to stomp to get grass shell:

Smb2 Mushroom: The ultimate moderate power up. Picking one of these up gives characters like the Mario bros the equivilant to recieving 2 Super Mushrooms. Other characters get a similar moderate boost. HP characters recover 2 HP. Arthur gets his armor back and a moon shield. Sonic and Tails get a ring boost. Etc etc:

Nice Obreck nice.

Take your time I know it's busy up there at this time of year and what you did is fantastic.

Keep up the good work.

Awesome progress Obreck! This oughta make the Subcon Panic stages more nostalgic!
Ultimate Gamer
Pretty darn cool Obreck. Keep up the good work!
mr3urious
Wow, Obie, you really outdid yourself! The addition of these items should make all the difference in later versions!
canadiansaiyan
Sounds great Obreck, but don't you think a 20 count for the cherries is a little too steep even with the carry over and longer starman invincibility time? I would think that a count of 10 would be sufficient to balance things out, but the decision is yours of course.
silentkill450
Wow nice dude! It's good to see some more smb2 items make it in the game.
Sum Gai
Good job.
Psychopath
Woah...I'm lovin the nostagia here

Any other "grass" items planned? Guns? Potions? That rocket ship?

And does the starman appear a la SMB2? or will it just spawn where the HUD is (kinda like in SML2, but with gravity and bouncing)
Paulomedi
Question: When you get the 20th cherry, where on the screen the starman appears?
Obreck2
Answering some questions:

The cherry Starman appears like it did in SMB2. It appears at the bottom in one of the screen corners, then begin zig zagging to the top, unaffected by solid objects.

The 20 cherry requirement is intended to make the feature a bit more unpredictable. You might go through a stage or 2 before collecting cherries enough to enjoy that temporary free ride. A gold cherry worth 5 might be made for the stage designers' convience.
AuraLancer
Sweet. And I second Psychopath's grass rocketship request.
TheBlackKnightman
Nice work obreck! I also see that you've begun work on the rupees.

I also replied to your coding work in Starsims topic. Didn't even see it till about a week ago.

This is cool and all but sometimes I worry that the game will become too packed full of stuff 0_o.

I don't think we should worry about that till it starts happening.

Also, does the cherry star float upwards from the bottom of the screen, or does it just appear as a regular star and jump around?
evildevil97
I definitely like the cherry usage. Good job on adding that. (Zigzagging, TehSyncMan. Obreck said so four replies above you.) I'm much more intrigued by the subcon mushrooms, though.

And now two people called out TehSyncMan for not reading in this topic! Horray!

SMB2 Key:

This key is dramaticly different from the standard SMW key.

It's carried SMB2 style. It unlocks red locked doors instead of gold ones. And it can be used as a weapon:

The Smb2 can also be carried across screens. Here Mario enters a warp door and still has the key next screen:

Hm... Is Phanto going to be in the game?

He's already in MKF...just not extensively used...he was origionally in the secrect in World 1-2 (The Transitway) until replaced by a battle with Mouser...you can still find him in Hello Castle in the Minus World, you can summon him by grabbing his key, when he touches it, it warps back to it's starting location and Phanto vanishes
Clark
This game needs more phanto. Seriously.

so im guessing that there will be some levels with a room that has the key but the lock is in another room?
TheomanZero
Having two different kinds of keys could certainly add more variety to level designs. Can the new key also be used for secret exits, or only for doors?

Well, I meant when you grab the SMB2 key. It's nice to know he's technicly in the game though.

The Smb2 key would have its own secret exit lock, a different shape and color to set it apart.

A legitimate smb2 AI phanto will be coded in due time, the Hello engine Phanto may be reskinned and still stick to the SMW style keys. One step at a time folks.
Psychopath
are the SMB2 keys solid like the SMB2 blocks or can you walk through them like their SMW counterparts?

I believe it was the latter in the origional...I'd have to check

Its not solid in MKF. It was solid in SMB2, but I decided it was too much of an annoyance.

Sorry but, who's Phanto 0_o?

ah, so you can't trap enemies between a key and a wall now?

I used to like trapping the enemy spawn point so I wouldn't need to worry...

oh well tongue.gif

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooohhh

I know Phanto

The Smb2 Rocket is ready. It does what it did in Smb2:

Coding question: Would it be possible to set up the Rocket as an exit of a level? Or, more precisely, a hidden exit.

Oh yes, that's excellent.
Texanfan27
The rocket is going to add a whole new degree of levels likly, I can see it already being used by the dozens in the SHUMPS world and Halo World {and maybe demon world} alone
Obreck2
Original Mario Bros style POW block:

This POW is activated by being hit from below like a ? brick. Also while it can not be carried or moved it can be used 3 times. These blocks will likely see use in areas where you might fend off waves of enemies in a contained room. Such as the 2 flood battle rooms in the Library:

That coin things in the shots is an enemy money drop. The Mario Bros style POW blocks flash color and grow smaller with each use.
MONEYMAN
I was about to code SMW colored keys... Anyways, would it be possible to make POW blocks only hurt enemies on the ground?
ancara
this looks amazing.

I also saw the rupees in those pics.

When you do get a basic rupee-shop system done, can ya show us eet, so we can see how it'll work?

Oh, and I can't wait to see what ya do next. :3
Player Two
You're on quite the roll since the last updates from awhile ago. More and more items means level designers can get more creative, especially with items like the rockets. I take it you're going for as much SMB2 items as possible at this rate right?
Psychopath
Rocket Ships=badass

I can't wait to see all these new updates implemented in-game (SP!)
Obreck2
Sonic monitors now use slightly smaller sprites, the Sonic 3 style was just a bit too big.

Looks way better with the small ones now, especially with a character standing next to them.

Good job on all the updates Obreck, can't wait till I can see them in-game.
Hyper Shadic
This is some very good work Obreck! The rockets look great, i cant wait to test them(Hopefully in the next MKF version).
Theused
Wow I love the new Sonic Monitors!
Clark
The rockets are a pretty nice addition to the game.
Shodian
An excellent job once again Obreck, I am eger to see what you unvail next. And I wouldn't mind asking you some Game Maker Language questions in the future if you have time.
Angelic Moon
This stuff looks nice. I like that some other things are coming in here.
Pouncer
I like the new art for the sonic monitors, can't wait to see what your classified WIP is.

Thats what i'm saying.
I take it some people are just out to start drama.

Anyway as not to totally derail the topic.

Perhaps the SMB2 mushroom should have a poison counterpart.

It would be a nasty suprise especially for toxic toadstool zone.

Everyone just shut up and stop posting about necroposting. If you look at the rules, you would see that you should just stop posting about the obvious and just inform the goddamn mods to take care of it. Quit acting stupid over a single goddamn post, all of you.
