I'm not kidding you. If you can find a better one, please tell me.

Pity mine was made in Game Maker 5, which won't run in Vista or directly convert to newer Game Maker versions.

BlazeTheHedgehog seems to have a very good handle on special effects and player design (though he never includes more than one playable, making the process much easier). His AI design needs serious work though.

Maybe I'm being a bit judgemental of his work, but you should have seen some of the comments he left on the MKF blog. Make's my ego look like a spec of dust.

Since you asked about over Castlevania fangames, here's a video of mine. Sadly its a dead project:

EDIT: Heh, watching my video reminds how far my own skills have come along.

BlazeHedgehog uses MMF2 for his games. I've had a not-so-good experience with MMF when I used its older versions (1.2 Build 98) on Super Mario MF and the original Xeno Fighters EX because of its horrible limitations.

Not to turn this into a BlazeHedgehog bashfest topic, but what Obreck said is true. I'm fine with people criticizing stuff I do or work on, as long as they are objective about it and do not try to force their ideals of how they think a video game should be made. He left such comments as "I liked it better when it was just Mario going through the different worlds" and "why do the coins and Goombas change appearance?" That just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Do not even bother replying to him, because he gets VERY defensive if you're the least bit contrary to his views. I once responded to him "We have multiple characters because that's the direction we're taking MKF." His response? "Hah. What a professional-sounding response!"

I've heard of BlazeHedgehog's extreme sensitivity to criticism, but I did not think it was THAT extreme until I saw it over at ModDB. He can dish it, but he sure cannot take it.

I had no idea. Of course, I don't make games or anything like that, so I guess I wouldn't know about all these people. The game still looks good, though.

Admittedly, Obreck's looked like a great time killer too. Shame he abandoned that.

Are you the one who is going to create the Castlevania stages I remember hearing about? I sure hope so after seeing that though yes it is a shame to hear that your Castlevania game was abadoned.

I think this one looks the best.

That comment from him is kinda hypocritical considering goombas change appearance every level in his Super Mario: Blue Twilight game.

He also complained about us using art from different games and such. Anyone who has been following MKF even slightly would not be shocked when they see non-Mario graphics in this project.

Back on topic, I did find an interesting SMB1-Castlevania crossover fangame. I'm going to put up a video of in later.

A Mario Castlevania? Wow. That sound s kind a cool actually....not that I play Castlevania or anything...

A symphony of the night remake or fangame would simply blow my effing mind.

Here's that Mario-Castlevania crossover I mentioned earlier. It's called Super Mario XP:
AnthemHero
I remember that one. I mad it all the way up to level 6 and gave up.

It's Mario with a lack of Mario.

That's kind of what I had in mind for my platform RPG. With Zelda2 & Castlevania 2 type elements like a world map and towns mixed in. By SOTN style changing eviroments, big inventories, lots of different bosses and such.

Maybe you could call it, "Castlevania: Symphony of the Fusion" Or something along those lines. biggrin.gif

I guess the designer was going for a serious Mario here. Personally, I'd rather have Mario with a Japanese tough-guy voice in this game than "Hah!" "Wah!" "Mama-mia!" "Woohoo!" "Yippee!" "Whooo-aaaaaooooowwww!"

Yeah, I guess its better than the so darn annoying Mario voice that play all the time in the Advance series. I perfer the Super Show voices over the Advance ones. At least Chales Martinet did a better job in Brawl.
Anyway, are there any download links?

EDIT: For those who want to play the game, you can download it here: http://compactiongames.about.com/gi/dynami...super-mario-xp/

Actually I didn't abandon the idea. Still want to do it sometime. The engine in the video is toast though. Its a grand mess and all its progress would be better off remade.

Funny, if I decide to make it with GM I'd likely use on of various open source Sonic engines as a base, just for their often outstanding collision. Everything else could just be worked in.

Then there's still a reason to wake up in the morning!

I just went out and bought symphony of the night again for the ps1.
This topic has renewed my love for castlevania.

Mario jumps one block higher when he yells. He can do a high jump when you press Up+Jump.

I tried that OpenBOR Castlevania game. It's got its kicks, but still suffers from the biggest problem Beats of Rage has: The developers don't test enough. Seriously, I've played three good Beats of Rage games out of the 50+ they have on lavalit, and they were all by the same guy, and they were all Splatterhouse games.

(Blaze Hedgehog) Dude, I don't know what the last demo was like because Game Maker really hates my system it seems, but this demo feels like a mess. It really, really feels like you're overextending yourselves to make a game that is way, way over your heads. Considering how weirdly awesome early videos of this looked, now it just feels like you're trying to do way too much and the game is suffering for it. I get the sensation that this game is going for quantity over quality.

Ignoring how choppy Mario moves (I blame GM - I doubt thats your fault), the inconsistency between levels throws me off a lot. I get that when you have Mario visiting Doom's Space Station, Halo's Ringworld and Megaman's stuff you'll have visual inconsistency, but even between the Mario-themed levels everything wildly changes. Suddenly Goombas look completely different, coins look (and sound) completely different, you have sprites from different games and different artists together that seem to be clashing wildly... just a general "throw something at the wall and see if it sticks and even if it doesn't stick very well we're going to keep it anyway" mentality.

I get that the Mario game I made probably isn't much better, but that was also four or five years ago and I've learned a considerable amount since then. Just know that I'm not trying to be insulting, I'm not trying to be rude, I was just really interested in this game and that interest is rapidly dwindling.

Wow, what a dick.
AuraLancer
Honestly, I think he has a point, and that particular quote didn't seem that hot-headed to me.

I would enjoy a little more consistency with this game, but it obviously doesn't bother me to the point that I lose interest.

This game WILL be awesome when it is finished, and I will be proud to have contributed to it.
Fabled Chef
He's complaining that someone tried something different. Also, I think the game looks fairly consistent inside of its respective worlds, so I don't really see what he's complaining about.

Basically he's become an "OMG THIS ISN'T MARIO UR GAY" type, just more articulate.

The statement is hypocritical because in his own fangame, Super Mario Blue Twilight, Goombas also change appearance and he has a Sonic level and a Castlevania level there too. He just seems to be forcing his views on our project, and trying to wave his "four or five years" of game-making experience in our faces. Obreck and I have a COMBINED 27 YEARS of game making experience, but we do not go around forcing our views on other people's projects.

I admire his work, but he clearly has a different view on how to make games than we do. He does not seem to respect that people try different things.
AuraLancer
Okay, I figured I wasn't getting the whole story based on everyone's reactions to his comments. Maybe he's just jealous, then?

Here's another promising CV fan game I found:

I saw that one awhile ago. It did look cool, but I don't think it's done.
