Full Version: Koopa Wars

(I apoligize if I may seem rude, but as of this moment, the dev team will be temporarily suspended. Don't think of it as a punishment: Think of it as a small break.)

Koopa Wars is one of those Platformer games involving outwitting your opponet and strategy made with Gamemaker 7.

The idea is this: There are only Koopa Bros fighting in this game. I have a nice sheet of Koopa Bros found in Mario Fangames Galaxy (MFGG). However, if you wish to make your OWN KoopaBros, don't hesitate to help out.

I'll need assistance with programming them, etc, as I want this to be a team-based project like MKF. (Don't worry, I won't overthrow MKF. heh)

(If you wish to help out, tell me the job you want. You can have more than one. Also, if you want the GM file, PM me or tell me over the Official Chat (Note: not the IRC one) and I'll send you the GM file)

Rules for helping out:

1. Nothing too "Out-of-bounds" for Koopa Bros or Level Suggestions. Something like "GangstaBros" is too "Out-of-bounds", however, "MilitiaBros" is fine.
2. If you're customizing sprites, you need to give me a link to the picture for verification. If you're re-coloring them, same thing, but also say what you re-colored, say, you re-colored the Hammer bros. Here's an Example below:

3. Level Designers, you can make a room with whatever background you like that is not personal. If you can't do that, stick to video game-related subjects. (Indie game levels will be shot down on sight.)
4. If you're a Scripter or Misc. designer, send me the GM file afterwards as a different name so I know it's the Koopa Wars GM file and not something else.
5. If you're an Alpha-tester, you WILL NOT recieve the GM File until everything is finished. Once this is done and I have Alpha-tested it myself, the Alpha GMs on the list will get the GM file. (If you took more than Alpha-tester, say a Programmer AND a Spriter, you will get the GM file first, so you can do everything, then test it yourself, before sending me the file so I can test it. Just being a Spriter, you'll only need to add in the sprites and send it to a Programmer, who then sends it to me to test if they're not already an Alpha-tester)
6. Lastly, anyone can play the Beta's when they're released. If you haven't signed up for a job, however, you won't get the GM files.

That being said, let's start!

P.S. If you use a different name, of it I spelt it wrong, i'll edit it. Don't worry. wink.gif

As in terminology: Strategy Platformers (I meant Platformer Action & strategy, but w/e) are sort of a new era: They're Platformers that involve a simple area (Or a story mode, which means SMB-style levels) that use several weapons or items. (In this case, it's both Super Mario Items, various items to other players discresion, and whatever attack the Koopa Bros had)

In this game, I'm going to mix it up a bit and share the details to everyone:

-Story-driven campaign, pitting you against other Koopa Bros.
-A Battle-mode that pits you against 3 AI opponets (Currently straightening out how the Multiplayer portion would work in this game. It takes a VERY long while, FYI)
-Several items from verious Super Mario games, and I plan on including some 3D Mario gaming items as well using 2D sprites (That would mean I would also try and get the ice Flower and Metal Cap in the game. wink.gif )
-Lots of Koopa Bros choices to choose from (Hopefully. In the Sprite Sheet I use for these, I counted over 25, plus variations, which means over 50 Koopa Bros will currently be in the roster, plus whatever the Spriters come up with.)
-A ton of maps. (Might add in a custom Level Editor for the Battle Mode part if people decide they want and my Dev team thinks it's okay)
-The Koopa Bros will have their own unique patterns of attack and mobility, as to what the programmers/coders want to do. (Heavy Fire Bros, for instance, will shake the ground, and the soon-to-be in Bazooka Bros will fire a type of Projectile Bill from his launcher... At least, in my perspective point of view.)
-There WILL be power-ups for both Story and battle modes.

With that said, I'll put the finishing touches to the Koopa Wars GM File and send it to the current Dev team members and those who choose to sign up as a part of the Dev, UNLESS you're a pure Alpha tester.

EDIT2: Shadic is now no longer helping us with coding. As the delay is getting too long, I have decided to TRY and code. Please send me everything you have so far. (Theused is the only exception.)

With the exception of the Dry Hammer Bros, you need a set of projectiles to go with that. Other than that, those'll be sprited for the game (I like the Halo and Megaman ones better. biggrin.gif )

P.S. Don't bother putting up projectiles for Racoon/Takooni bros, those are fine. wink.gif

Actually for the (Halo Bros.? Chief Bros.? Master Bros.? Spartan Bros.? Yeah, lets go with that one) Spartan Bros., I was thinking of swapping the pistol out with a custom sprite, since that one is from Halo Zero (the same guys who made those Halo sprites we used to use) and for the Mega Bros., I thought we could just use the Wily Wars or MM7 buster discharges.
I can also be a level designer/tileset creater, I designed the first half of the beer level.

The custom sprites sound good to me. And I'll also update the jobs list and add in 2 more positions for 1 job as well.

Will there be powerups?

If so:

Flying Shell- allows you to fly until hit, but you lose your projectile resistant duck (if you have one).

Working on a Isle Delfino stage.... not sure whether to make a luigi's mansion stage because it is directly Mario related.

Luigi's Mansion is fine. Also, if possible, I would like to implement a Font-change feature. I picked up a rather nifty Paper Mario font from the MFGG site. (People on Chatango are able to view it as of now, since I changed it.) I would like that in the game as well... if it's possible on GM7. wink.gif

I'm not going to program the Character selection or anything like that until You have a firm design laid out and I have the actual physics and a couple Koopas done.

I need A full sprite sheet for the koopa you want me to do first.The Gmk you sent me has sprites saved in .Jpeg, And .Jpeg is very bad for Quality,thus rendering it kinda useless to us >.>

All sprites from now on should be saved as .png and that will save them from a loss of quality.

EDIT:
For the sprite sheets,I need all the actions,poses,and directions pre-sprited for me.
I don't have a hell of a lot of time like i used to so cutting out spriting on my end would really help.

Looks awesome, if you want, I could test it out for you. Considering I want to go in to game testing, it would be a good start for me, and I love helping with projects that have a lot of promise.

2. Exactly what sort of layout would you like?

3. Should I make it like a normal Mario stage, or make it so it's primarily about luring your enemies into traps laid around the stage?

4. What sort of mechanics will it have?

5. Will you be able to charge your weapon?

6. What is the health system?

Finished a Left 4 Dead level, enjoy. It is fairly simple and only has references to Left 4 Dead, it will use the zombie from metal slug considering that there are fat guy zombies, tall guy zombies and a lady zombie. The level's purpose is to find a safe place to rest at away from the zombies. The level has the Left 4 Dead feel created from the travleing of rooftops in order to avoid zombies. The level's name is Infected Metropolis.

It's from X8, but I think the red sky and dusty clouds really fit the theme.

ALSO: I am almost done with the full Hammer Bros. sheet. Like 85% or so.

The .JPEG 1s were an accident as I saved them in the wrong format. The rest, however, were saved as .png.

As for the Sprite sheets... I can do that. I know where to look.

Depends on the stage and mode, really. Most of the Story Mode levels SHOULD have a different mechanic set to them.

Depends on the weapon. Most will, but, say, the Bazooka Bros' weapons will NOT have a charge shot. (For instance, the Hammer Bro will throw multiple hammers (Hammer-time) and Icy Bros will be able to shoot faster, longer, bigger Iceballs (Freezer-burn).)

This will be a little tricky. Again, it'll mostly dependant on the stage, so come up with what would be the best HP system. (A few simple suggestions are the Paper Mario HP set for the Mario-based levels, a Robot Master meter for the Megaman-based levels (Color variartions for the Hammer bros is preferred), and a simple HP bar for realistic levels or levels set in the present or past, such as a Final Fantasy Tactics HP bar and Counter-Strike HP marker)

For levels such as Halo, an extra bar, your shields, may be implemented depending on the complexity of the level. (Take a look at some of the MKF levels. Something of Covenant Assault difficulty and length would automatically get you shields, but some, like Covenant Thy Veggies, do not.)

As for the newest Sprite Sheet you just showed us, keiang, I don't see the purpose with most of them. They look fine, but I'm confused with the functions. Please make it a little clearer.

And the clouds and background look fine as well.

Hammer Bro. (duh)
Hammer Bro can do most of the things mario can, with the exception of picking up and carrying crap. (His jumping sprites are also his walking sprites).

Sumo Bro.
Sumo Bro's main advantage is his ground attack, which can cause a Guts Man like stun effect. When on a platform, a bolt of lightning shoots down instead of the stun effect. However, he cannot attack in the air, making him a sitting duck in arial levels.

Bill Bro.
Bill Bro launches bullet bills forward in a straight line, which kinda makes him the rocket launcher guy.

Blast Bro.
The Blast Bro (or Bob-omb Bro.) is similar to the Bill Bro., but he launches the Bob-ombs at a slight angle, and has much shorter range. However his Bob-ombs can cause splash back damage, and explode on contact.

(From this point on I'll add descriptions to the older ones.)

Mega Bro.
Utilizes the Megabuster. Has only two charge levels, due to a major compatibility issue. The third column is for the normal shot, the 4-5 are for a charge shot. Upon releasing a charge shot, the Mega Bro requires a small cooldown time (which should be put in for balance issues.)

Spartan Bro.
Uses the Covenant Needler. Can rapid fire constantly, but does very little damage.

Leaf Bro.
The Leaf Bro have Mario-esque flight abilities, as well as his tail swipe.

Tanooki Bro.
The Leaf Bro, but with the added benifit of a statue morph.

Dry Bro.
An undead Hammer Bro, this creature can only be killed using projectiles, stomping only causes it to break apart, and it reassimmilates after a few seconds.

Yoshi Bro.
Essentially a Hammer Bro, but it lacks a projectile resistant duck, and has no hammers. Instead, he has his tongue, which he can use to damage and swallow foes, eat projectiles (<Awesomeness), and can use as a grapling hook (maybe. Depnends on how it would work, and if it is even possible in game maker).

(NOTE: I'll make full sheets of the other Bros later, I finished the full sheet last, and need to change the others into full sheets as well.)

As I said before I'm giving Trouble in Paradise to this game and I tried to redo the first section and to me it looks terrible but meh I'll post it anyway even though I'm probably going to redo it right now...

Basically the plot of this level gose like this; in an effort to escape the constant attacks of the Covenant, the Spartan Bros gather everyone in a Pelican to try to seek refuge on a seemingly dead planet. However the planet is teeming with weird creatures called Shroobs and to make things worse the Covenant followed them there.

So basically this is a Mario gameplay type game except you are useing Koopas. if so im in. id Love to stick to classical Mario stages and i also have that one stage not in use for MKF. if was just a wacky stage i made for a test drive but i think i got the hang of making levels. so if you need any type of levels id be willing to make a couple for it. I'm actually also getting the hang of Spriting too. coding is still the hard part lol. atm i am making a Yoshi's Island enemy if you want him in as a goomba type enemy. he's the cloaked guy. saw the banner in Theused Sig and thought Holyshit that looks kool. and to play as koopas even a neater idea. maybe i will make a spritesheet for a dagger Koopa lol.

Before you edit, Zero, Devs in the Spriting Department, save the pic to your computer, cut out the swimming/Flag Pole animations, and add it in as a sort of template if you want special swimming/flag pole goal styles. (Keiang made them, but Zero's here in case you don't want to view a wall of text that keiang has... Sry keiang.)

Perhaps, if someone would like to volunteer (From the Programming/Coding/Alpha Testing department)

Idea involving certain items:

Purple Coins (Super Mario Galaxy): Similar to MKF Rupees, these will act like currency in the game, only easier to find and collect. In a way, they're similar to NSMB Ace Coins, but, here's the idea: They would unlock Koopa Bros not normally found in Story Mode as well as better items.

(As for the sprites concerning the Hammer bros and how the items will react: Don't worry about changing the colors, etc. Just add-in a few things, make the Sprites less visible, etc. to match the item.)

Certain Unlockables that might be featured in the game include:

-Upgrades for the Koopa Bros.
-Shiny Koopa Bros. for Story Mode.
-Power-ups either from a different Mario game (Such as Super Mario Galaxy) or not related to Mario in anyway, such as Megaman Robot Master weapons, guns, etc. For enjoyment, don't suggest items from crappy games or indie games.
-Extra Koopa Bros. I'm thinking of putting in a few from the Sprite Sheet I found.
-Even Paper Mario RPG 1 & 2 badges, if people want.

(In general, normally, SMB3, SMW, or SMB2 items would be automatically in the game, unless you get permission from me to use something different if you intend to use it for that game.)

Normal Items from these games include:

Mushroom (Obviously): Recovers HP.
Fire Flower (Non-Galaxized): Fires up your weapons, allowing extra damage.
Racoon Leaf: Allows flight, though nothing special and must be charged.
Cape: Allows flight. No charging is required. You can also "Bomb" the field, causing damage to non-aerial enemies. (Ceiling enemies will also be hit)
Takooni Suit: Allows charged flight. Can also turn into a statue. Takooni Bros' statues last longer.
Starman (Non-Galaxized): Invincible for a short time.
Hammer Suit (Thrown in to power-up your Koopa Bro. wink.gif ): Adds in extra damage, nothing special.
1-up (Non-Galaxized): Gives 1 life, obviously.

Some unlockable items (Mario Galaxy):

Bee Mushroom: Your weapon changes based on your Koopa Bro. (Hammer Bros would throw Spikes, for example). Extra damage is added, and allows flight. No charging for flying is required.

Boo Mushroom: Turn transparent, allowing you to walk through walls. You are also immune to certain enemies, though if you take damage from enemies that CAN harm you, you lose this power-up.

Spring-shroom: Jumps are higher for a period of time. Allows faster wall-jumps afterwards.

Life-shroom: Boosts your HP to 200% it's Normal HP, which can be recovered if HP is 101% or more. It cannot be recovered at 100% or below, but you still can recover normal HP damage.

Red Star: VERY RARE, touching this allows you to exit the level and take a "Red Star" path to a totally different level.

Ice Flower: Temporarily allows you to walk on water, freezing it solid. Useful for crossing aquatic terrain.

Fire flower (Galaxized): Collecting a SECOND Fire Flower allows for Super-charged attacks for a period of time, maximizing attack damage.

1-Up Mushroom (Galaxized): RARE, gives 3 lives rather than 1. Similar to the Moon in SMW. You can tell by it's different appearence.

hey how about i make a heatless koopa for a enemy or has that already been done? and i mean the koopa bros. projectile i would have to say shadow ball.

on a side note are the swim/carry going to be in KW or not. need to know befor i edit them.

Actually the duck sprite doubles as the pickup (kinda) and the normal walk (the one near the top with his hand in front and not at the back of his head) could sorta double as his carry. Maybe.

Alright, guys. This is it! We're moving on to the next phase!

Send your source codes to Shadic (Since, I think, he is still banned from the boards here, PM him over at chatango chat or, if you do not wish to do that, PM me if you feel uncomfortable about it and I'll make a board for Koopa Wars unless Glass Owl isn't dead.) so he can start. DO NOT post them here, I don't want too much trouble with the admins PLUS I don't want the source codes ruined.

There isn't really any coding I've done, but I guess I could start organizing sprites into the format you provided. And how can we ruin the source code if no coding has been done yet (at least in the copy I have) rolleyes.gif. Also, I have some questions. Will a swimming, duck, pickup/carry/hold, flagpole mechanic be involved?

In a mist of pure twilight, ruins that were once Bowsers sanctum. Bowser rests in his grave, as the minions that survive are near a death point from the war which has gone since 1985. The Mushroom Kingdom lies destroyed on a dead piece of land. After all the years of battling our Kingdom has finally one its victory...But that was soon to change. A new deadly threat has been aquired after our short lived victory. Our land is now put under eternal darkness. from the black magic of our threat. Now the time has passed, and the age of koopa is soon to end...But not today.

Here's my attempt at a better story:

A heavy grey mist hovers over ruins in which only a few structures remain in tact. These ruins are the remanents of Bowser's Keep and the result of a massive war. However this war isn't between the Koopas and the Mushroom Kingdom, this war is the product of technology, the most dangerous and uncontrolable weapon. Man, Koopa, and Toad are all the same, they seem to be under the impression that we have full control over technology. This, unfortunatly, is just an illusion. Ten years ago the Koopas and Bowser's servants, namely Kamek, were researching more powerful weapons that could be used to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom once and for all. Kamek found the technology of interdimensional travel. With this, Kamek could go to different worlds, harness their technology and take it back to the Mushroom World where it would be used against the Mushroom Kingdom. However this plan quickly backfired during one of the first expeditions to another dimension. Bowser and Kamek tarvled through an unstable portal causing a rip in space and time. Creatures from other dimensions began to pour out and destroy Bowser's kingdom. Without their leader, what were the Koopas to do. The Koopas seemed to be on the brink of extinction. This was thought to an unwinable war but a noble few decided that this was not the case...

I apologize for the necropost, as it may seem, but I decided to bring the game back up. I decided to do some code-edits after all.

Credits in advance for the standard character codes go to Hello and his Engine 3.

Now it's time to stop procrastinating and get this show on the road! Also, I appreciate story submissions, but as of now, the game devolopment is MUCH too early for one. I'm making modifications to Koopa Wars at the time of this post, so hopefully, an Alpha Demo will be ready.

Mini Hammer Bro.: A Hammer Bro. that picked up a Mini mushroom and got small. He can run on water and has a small hitbox but takes few damage and does few damage. "Don't judge me by my size....."
Fish Bro.: A Hammer Bro. that adapted himself to water. He is fast on water levels but bounces off land. "This stage feels fishy......."
Cutter Bro.: A Hammer Bro. who couldn't throw hammers so he relied on a cutting boomerang. His projectile goes straightforward then back and has a lot of health, but he is slow and like sonic, he requires a life jetpack to swim."Heavy armor means heavy shield!"

Huzzah for lack of a personal life! I fixed up the jump sprites and added a few alt pallettes for the Bros. I also tried to make a title, but I'd like some feedback, mostly cause it was a rush job (laptop battery was running low).

Well, guys, I made the Alpha Demo. There are lots of problems. =\

But the basic stuff is down: Movement, Hammer Toss, Coin set-up... well, I said BASIC stuff. Nothing too fancy, and too many issues for an actual Beta. If you give me pointers on stuff I've missed, I'll be making an Alpha Demo 2.

For now, the Alpha Demo 1 is ready.

P.S. I know the spriting issue, which will also be fixed.

Once I solved most of the Alpha issues and added in AT LEAST Level select, then yes. But right now, it's too... screwed over at the moment. (WHICH WILL BE RESOLVED! dry.gif )

I'm glad SOMEONE actually brought this to my attention.

Basically, those with "Plane" or "Treaded/Tired" qualities (Bomber Bro, for instance, shown here, as well as, say, "Tank Bro" and "Wheel Bro") will be displayed somewhat like the above picture. These will be known as "The Army Bros". The "Army Bros" will play slightly different than normal SMB3-styled Koopa Bros, but retain SOME features. (For instance, the Bomber Bro will throw his "Bombs" like a Hammer Bro, but won't go through solid objects.)

And since I'll be coding, here's the sprite-graphic requests:

Normal Koopa Bros (Medival-ish, such as Hammer/Fire Bro): SMB3-styled. (Which means I will reject PART of Keiang's sprite sheet. However, I have at least ONE for something else.)

"Army Bros" (Bomber Bro, Tank Bro, etc.): Similar to what Spriterkid has and what Keiang is also working on.

"Bionic Bros" (Koopa Bros with Metal/Robotic naming): As close to a Super Mario RPG-ish spritesheet as possible, but retaining the size of Mario. (Larger Bros the size of Bowser.)

"Gaming Bros" (Koopa Bros from different meta-games, such as Megaman, Halo, LoZ, etc. Boomerang Bro will fit into this category): Should resemble from this list:
Megaman: MMX series (SNES or similar)
Halo: Varies in size. Please keep it to a respectable size. (3d-ish)
LoZ (Legend of Zelda): Something twice/thrice the size of a top-down LoZ game. (SNES-3D-ish)
Metroid: Something slightly smaller than Samus from the Metroid games (NES/SNES)
Kirby: Slightly bigger than Kirby, but otherwise varied. Again, respect the size of the images. (Similar to KSSU-style)

That's about it.

P.S. if questions about the abilities for the Bros come up, I will answer. Video Game Bros should be obvious, but I'll answer the Bionic Bros if necessary.
