Full Version: WIP possible Bubble Bobble level
Riverroad
Video of the level idea here (Audio may be a bit loud)

Youtube video

The idea/gimmick is that Bub follows the player around the level and is used as a means to progress at certain points, while not feeling like an annoying escort quest. The overall level setup is sort of a World 7 of SMB3-meets-Bubble Bobble theme.

I enjoyed making it, and one of the forum members thought it was worth suggesting for the main game, so here it is. Hope it comes across well.

mr3urious
I really like this level. I like the idea of using Bub to get through the level, as well as the little tribute to the original game levels somewhere in between. There are some things that obviously need some 16-bit shading and correct sound effects for some things, but other than that, great job.

And here's a nice little Bubble Bobble remix you could use.

Also, a long time ago when this a BB level was suggested, I think Hyper Drunk from Bubble Symphony was also suggested as a boss. Maybe he could be the one here.

Ah yes, I really like the design, a simple level with a fun gimmick is always awesome. I was hoping this would be a world 8 or -1 level, since it fits. Loved it and I hope my fellow devs do as well. wink.gif
Ben66
I could definately see this in World 8.

Awesome level, hope it gets accepted. You put alot of work in design and coding bub in as a follower/weapon!
D-TurboKiller
Nicely done, I like how this Bubble Bobble level is turning out.
I have a few nitpicks though:
-Bub can't follow you over obstacles unless you jump, and even so just barely. I suggest you make him mimic your movements when you get just a little far from him so he can always follow you.
-Bub should auto-assist when you're not using him (as in shooting enemies).
-What are those sonic bump sounds from 2:38 to 3:03?
-The checkpoint at 4:06 is weird floating in the air like that, you could have easily placed it on the platform above.
-His disappearance when you touch the goal flag at 6:03 is also weird, fix it.

Other than that, looking good!

I thought the level would be a great addition as well when I stumbled across it a couple of days ago on youtube.

I'm all for this level.

If assistants are planned for other levels, Bub could be used as a base.

IIRC World 8 is for games that were playable on the old NINTENDO's console, not precisely made by Nintendo. Examples of games that would still fit in this world: battletoads, bubble bobble, double dragon, Bomberman, Galaga, Pac-Man, etc..

About Turbo's nitpicks... some of them are well, really nitpicks, take it easy man!

-Bub can't follow you over obstacles unless you jump, and even so just barely. I suggest you make him mimic your movements when you get just a little far from him so he can always follow you.

I don't think that's necesary, he would still get stuck, and for areas like this you could just grab him. Remember Obreck is going to do something with weapons allowing you to duck, run, and do more moves more freely, and the guy coded him nicely to follow you in a bubble if he stays behind. This isn't needed imo.

-Bub should auto-assist when you're not using him (as in shooting enemies).

That's not necessary either... the point of Bub in there is to serve as a weapon, so you can control what enemies and when to shoot to use as platforms. I don't think that's what the creator wanted, and he shooting everything would be eeehhh

-The checkpoint at 4:06 is weird floating in the air like that, you could have easily placed it on the platform above.

I don't know how is that a problem... in Super Mario World there are dozens of floating checkpoints. I guess he liked it there unsure.gif

-His disappearance when you touch the goal flag at 6:03 is also weird, fix it.

Sure thing boss!!

Lol, this one however is a good observation.

Win.
I'll be making skinned goombas for this.

Ooh! This looks delightful! I wholeheartedly approve!

I chuckled a little when Bub made the gun sound the first time you picked him up. It might be nice to get a different sound effect for that, though.
Texanfan27
I'm dang well impressed, I hope this gets in, only thing I see missing is a reference to the puzzle series {Bust A Move where the dragons are as well}, but thats not even needed here.

Bravo and I hope to see more of your work soon

I think the music fits just fine, and I really don't have anything else to say.

It's all in my Youtube comments.

Ah much better. Anyway I have to agree about most of what you said. But now I'll nitpick you, MUHAHA:
-Get stuck you say? I'd say it would be very hard if he could mimic your movements like that. But for some reason I keep thinking that mimic will lead to certain bugs (Bub would jump to a now non-existing bubble that you used before it disappeared). Yeah, maybe it's too much trouble.
-I agree. I really don't know why I suggested this, I thought it would be a good idea at the time (aka drunk LOL). But now that I look at it, it'll probably just make the level way too easy.
-Ugh, to be honest I never liked those floating checkpoints. It's like a somewhat heavy object is defying the LAWS OF GRAVITY. It would have made a lot more sense if they made a small floating checkpoint with propellors on the bottom, but anyway...
-Hooray thanks, 1 out of 4 correct nitpicks isn't so bad... I think.

Anyway like I said, I'm finding the level to be entertaining, and we'll probably see a better version of it soon enough.
Riverroad
Thank you for all the replies. Nice to see so many of you liked the idea.

It does sound ridiculous right now, I'll try to find a better sound for it.

Done and done. I don't think I improve the little guy's ability to follow the player, though. The follow distance has the side effect that he'll often jump into obstacles instead of over them if he mimics the player. I can't make him follow any closer or Link and Roll/Protoman might accidentally pick him up when meaning to use a sword slash or special weapon, respectively. This was the best solution I could come up with.

I don't know if a boss is really needed in a level like this. Part of Bub's gimmick is that he doesn't damage enemies that can't be "bubbled" so a boss would be difficult to implement without seeming out of place.

Also, I'm uniformly terrible at graphics. So if anything needs to be altered to fit into the game better, I may need some help. sad.gif

First off, I'd like to say welcome to the Reactor. I'm actually a little impressed with how clever and well-designed your level is, especially given it being a first attempt. And I'm not easily impressed (except by the other devs). We don't get a lot of new folks in here who actually have something tangible to bring to the table, generally just folks with random ideas and suggestions (and occasionally demands).

Floating checkpoints aren't "weird", SMW had tons of them. I guess it's a little out of place in the sense that no other levels in MKF have floating ones, but it's not really that strange. Actually, until I read this I had forgotten there were floating checkpoints- I'll have to remember to add a few into my levels.

Not saying the level needs a boss (I don't think it does), but just for the sake of argument; if you did want to put a boss into a stage like this, it would be interesting to make it sort of a "puzzle boss". Instead of shooting the boss with the bubbles, you'd shoot his projectiles or enemies he spawns, and use them to reach a higher position where you could stomp him, or attack a hard-to-reach weak point or something. God knows it would definitely add some variety to the type of bosses in the game.
evildevil97
I have nothing to say that hasn't been already said, but wow... the idea alone was brilliant. The results are fantastic.

ohh can i Make some custom Bubblen sprites for this? can i? huh? can i? PWEEASE?!!
ZeroFollower0
THAT WAS IMPRESSIVE!!! id love to help make the bubbled enemy sprites. and love to see this in world 8. tho one suggestion. you should make the bubbles move up slower when someone is on them. like in megaman. one other thing maybe you should give the bub and bob color scemes for each character. just for a added bonus. i know one of the bubble bobble games had multi colored versions.
... i can alrdy see a goomba bubbled lol... in a bub bubble i mean.

off-topic: we need a Donkey Kong Arcade level now if not in alrdy. and actually get points for jumping barrels. the DK gameboy version had some long levels maybe one of those. ohhhh and make the starman hammers.... but then that would have to be adding more sprites to the characters nvm on that. but we can swap the hammers for stars. alrdy have the DK enemies thnxs to person who made arcade factory. just need to give him the sprites from DK gameboy.

NO Body is a bit bogged down for now, so I went ahead and franken-sprited the warp animations in:

user posted image

Also if this stage is added in MKF, which odds are looking very good, I'd like to retile the bricks with Bubble Bobble tiles. The pipes and Mario enemies are fine as is of course, being they are a key elements of the stage's fusion hybrid theme.
Riverroad
Thank you very much for the warp sprites. Bubblun is all set now.

Using bubble bobble tiles instead of the SMB2 ones would be great, but I haven't managed to find any that do not appear to clash horribly with this game's graphics. I would not mind at all if the level's appearance changed if it was added to MKF though.
TheomanZero
Here's an idea that may be stupid, but I'm throwing it out anyway:

Would it be possible to make it so that when you grab the flagpole, Bubblun morphs into Bubby (human Bub)?
Irockz
Bubblun should, instead of flying up, follow you into the castle. then, when you go to the HQ, Bubblun is standing there.
