Full Version: Switching Characters at Checkpoints
WhiteRoseBrian
Using different characters in different parts of Bydo Stations gave me an idea. What if we could be given the option to switch to another character whenever we cross checkpoints? That could give the impression of a team effort from the Coalition.

On a side note, since Judge Spear was inspired by Super Mario Land 2, maybe the checkpoints can be changed from gates to hanging bells.
Spriterkid1997
Good idea! I think that should be used!
THEN IF THE NEXT PART WAS IMPOSSIBLE WITH A CERTAIN CHARACTER YOU COULD SWITCH TO A BETTER ONE!
TheomanZero
Well, if you touch the checkpoint and die, you can just go back to the coalition and change characters, then come back. So this seems like a reasonable suggestion.

I don't think the checkpoints have to be changed from their current SMW design, though. They're fine as is.
Captain_Cook
Is this really needed? After all, the game is supposed to be Nintendo Hard (according to JS).

Secondly, if there will be any change to the checkpoints, there should be differently themed checkpoints in different places. I find the bell to "kiddie" for stages like Corpse of the Behemoth.

(Speaking of which... why do we have the bright and cheery SMW checkpoint everywhere?)

That's actually a good point. The SMW checkpoint doesn't exactly fit in every stage. I've actually used my ToeJam & Earl save flags in a couple places where the SMW one doesn't fit. Plus the entire Sonic world uses those starpost save points instead.
I'll look into maybe setting up some differently themed save points for the various worlds.
AdminJS
The SMW checkpoints are instantly recognizable. Why fix something that ain't broke?

If we make multiple kinds of checkpoints, that will be later down the line. LArs has gotten the ball rolling with the TJ&E checkpoints.
AuraLancer
You can easily change characters at checkpoints by dying. I do like the different themed check points, however.
Kilometers Persecond
I think some variant of this is going to be included in the Pokemon world subquest, but I'm not sure.
mr3urious
I think that each world should have one type of checkpoint, but certain levels (like the TJ&E ones) could get their own distinct one.
rukifellth
Well, as far I can imagine, the different types of Checkpoints you could have would be:

Mushroom Kingdom: SMW Checkpoints...

Mobius: Sonic Checkpoints...

20XX: Megaman PoweredUp Checkpoints...

DemonRealm: Castlevania Aria of Sorrow Save Points? (at least the statue)

Science Fiction World: SuperMetroid Save Points?

Earth: Perhaps a mixture?

Nintendo Subspace: No idea...

just some ideas...

D-TurboKiller
Yeah, I'm all for varied checkpoints, the SMW checkpoints really wouldn't fit everywhere, so a little variety would be great.

I had the idea of using Jazz Jackrabbit sign checkpoints as far as I had the idea for the level, I don't know if Shodian has it coded yet though.

Well, a possible idea would be, instead of making different checkpoints, we take the general SMW checkpoint and give it different skins, color patterns, etc. that better match the worlds they're in. Like, say, a rusty, blood-stained version for Demon World levels, or a futuristic, chrome-looking one for Halo levels, etc.

We already skin bricks and ? Blocks to better suit different levels, why not the checkpoints?
ZeroFollower0
I love the character change suggestion at checkpoints. also the checkpoint different skins alrdy has a thread pls discuss it there and stay on track with this threads topic being the ability to swap characters at checkpoints. ill post link to CHeckpoint skin thread

By that logic, we shouldn't have introduced themed coins, blocks, etc. because those weren't "broken" either.

We DO skin them, Lars.

W7 has/will have the Sonic 1 Lamps. It has been discussed that W3 will have the Powered Up checkpoint (And if I can get the sprites, I am going to give them to JS for when he redoes the Megaman levels) And World 8's was supposed to depend on the level you are in.

W2, W4, W5, the new W6 and W9 never had checkpoints decided though.

Um, the Sonic starposts are not skins, they're completely different objects.

JS's argument was that the SMW-style checkpoints are instantly recognizeable, so I'm suggesting that instead of making completely seperate checkpoint objects for each world/level, we just keep the SMW checkpoint, but with a different color or texture to it. It would still be the same basic shape, two posts with a ribbon between them.

I found some on Spriters Resource once, but that site has been screwy lately. I think someone might be Pirating the site or something.
The Qu
Yeah, their domain ran out and someone picked it up. Their trying to get it back apperently, though. (And I was going to get those sprites when I found out the site was gone. X_X)

I'm actually tickled that my initial suggestion, even after being turned down, sparked a discussion on the artwork of the game.

Here's my new thought. If and when we go to make skins for the gates, we can also consider working on skins for flags for some levels. For example, Castle Wolfenstein can have the flag of present-day democratic Germany. Unfortunately, that's the only example that I can think of at the moment.
Verin100
Okay. Away from the skins because that's not what this topic is about.

If you want to be able to switch characters at checkpoints. I think it should only be out of one character that you choose before hand.
Example: when you select characters, you select primary and secondary.
Default would, of course, be Mario and Luigi.
