We already skin bricks and ? Blocks to better suit different levels, why not the checkpoints?

We DO skin them, Lars.
W7 has/will have the Sonic 1 Lamps. It has been discussed that W3 will have the Powered Up checkpoint (And if I can get the sprites, I am going to give them to JS for when he redoes the Megaman levels) And World 8's was supposed to depend on the level you are in.
W2, W4, W5, the new W6 and W9 never had checkpoints decided though.
Um, the Sonic starposts are not skins, they're completely different objects.
JS's argument was that the SMW-style checkpoints are instantly recognizeable, so I'm suggesting that instead of making completely seperate checkpoint objects for each world/level, we just keep the SMW checkpoint, but with a different color or texture to it. It would still be the same basic shape, two posts with a ribbon between them.

I found some on Spriters Resource once, but that site has been screwy lately. I think someone might be Pirating the site or something.

Yeah, their domain ran out and someone picked it up. Their trying to get it back apperently, though. (And I was going to get those sprites when I found out the site was gone. X_X)

I'm actually tickled that my initial suggestion, even after being turned down, sparked a discussion on the artwork of the game.
Here's my new thought. If and when we go to make skins for the gates, we can also consider working on skins for flags for some levels. For example, Castle Wolfenstein can have the flag of present-day democratic Germany. Unfortunately, that's the only example that I can think of at the moment.

Okay. Away from the skins because that's not what this topic is about.
If you want to be able to switch characters at checkpoints. I think it should only be out of one character that you choose before hand.
Example: when you select characters, you select primary and secondary.
Default would, of course, be Mario and Luigi.
