Because I've honestly got nothing better to do, and because I want to have something here other than "OMG WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK IS THE BEST GAEM EVAR!!!!" or something similar to that.
Please keep in mind that this is my opinion of how I see things how they are. Feel free to agree or disagree or bring up any other points you feel are worth mentioning.
In this, lets start with the three consoles that have been around for a while now.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the first of this generation, so lets start off with that. When the origional Xbox was going to be released along with Nintendo's Gamecube, I immediately scoffed at the idea of Microsoft making a console. For most of my life, I've been Nintendo all the way with video games, with a bit of Genesis games and some Playstation stuff (and PS2 as well). And to be honest, I'm still kind of amazed and perplexed on how Halo was able to drag it up as it's flagship title.
Well okay, fine, it's not too hard to figure out. It's single player experience was....well it was alright. It's multiplayer was what really caught on. While PC gamers had stuff like Unreal Tournament as a multiplayer FPS game, the best FPS console games I can think of around that time were both N64 games (Goldeneye and Perfect Dark). So the Single Player caught on and the Multiplayer really drove the point home for the Xbox to start to actually succeed. Fast-Forward to the creation of Xbox Live, one of the first Console Online services (or maybe not the FIRST, but it was the one that stuck), and then fast-forward to the 360's release. The origional Xbox served as the testing ground, the prototype attempt at making a console for Microsoft.
Regardless of the Red Ring of Death hardware problem which happens to some consoles, the 360 is a success. Xbox Live has grown from simply a way for online gaming to be accessible to a complete service, allowing players to connect and communicate with each other, download new games or additional content for their existing games, among other things. The library of games is strong, although I must admit I find it a bit hard to find truely exclusive titles for the console, especially those made by Microsoft. Truely, what keeps the 360 going is what it has made for itself, providing a fantastic quality for online gaming, a cheaper priced console (at least until the PS3 Slim), and the sort of sense being able to create a community.
Sony's PS3 you could say got off to a bad start. At least in my opinion, I feel that the origional $600 price point really hurt the thing. The actual system isn't bad at all, but it just didn't seem to be worth it at first. Price point, and of course, library. What PS3 exclusives existed that were truely worth it yet? Still, time would tell if it would manage to pick itself off the ground and start going up, or if it would stay lying on the ground and eventually die.
Of course, it was able to succeed. New and fantastic games came about and really helped the console prove itself. Little Big Planet and Metal Gear Solid 4 are common examples of games that truely proved itself. Sony made the Playstation Network as a counter argument to Microsoft's Xbox Live service, which unlike it's counterpart, is completely free. It's still behind Xbox Live, as Microsoft has had more time to work with it and perfect it, but it seems like it could be catching up.
With the release of the PS3 Slim, Sony seems to be almost on equal terms with the 360. The libraries are fairly equal, as both the PS3 and 360 share many of the same 3rd Party games, both have online marketplaces to download and buy new games or addons, both has solid online gaming support, and so on. To me, it seems that both are neck and neck with eachother, and with both systems priced at $299, the race between the two may have only begun.
